I haven't been here in a few days as my book went back into editing and I have been really busy at work. But, I sure do miss hanging out here.
I wanted to say a few words about the Freedom of Speech. Does it really exist?
It has been my observations lately that sometimes people might say some things and then wish they hadn't. Or people might be afraid to speak at all. Is Freedom of Speech really free if one is regretful or afraid? Is Freedom of Speech really free if one can be sued for what comes out of their mouth?
Sometimes I wonder. I recently read a blog written by a young writer who is incredibly talented in his sport. I was more than a little offended by his words but have not attacted him like others have. The reason why I have been silent is that while I may not agree with what he said, I will always defend his right to say it. Then on the other hand, I also defend his right to defend his words when the people that he offended attack him for utilizing his right to free speech.
I don't know about anyone else but that paragraph just confused the heck out of me. I know what I said is true. Everyone has the right to free speech but they also have to deal with the consequenses.
So there is the question. Is free speech really, truly free or are we stuck in a world where people are so afraid to offend anyone that they just remain silent?
