One For The Record Books 2/11/2010 7:21:53 PM
It's snowing, been snowing, looks like it's gonna keep on snowing ... It has been an incredible, incredible day across North Central Texas.
Snow was in the forecast as a low pressure system to the west approached the area.
They just weren't expecting this much. '1 to 3 inches of snow,' they said. Then, 2 to 4. 3 to 6?
Whoops. Got a lot more than that!
How about 9.4 inches of snow at DFW airport as of 9 p.m. CST? 7.2 inches in my back yard.
STILL snowing, although not as heavy.
This SHATTERS the daily record snowfall for this date (2/11): the previous record was 1.4 inches of snowfall back in 1988.
This SHATTERS the record for 24 hour record snowfall for February: the previous was 7.5 inches on February 17, 1978 and on February 25, 1924.
This SHATTERS the greatest calendar-day snowfall on record for Dallas-Fort Worth. The previous was 7.8 inches of snowfall on Jaunuary 15, 1964 and on January 14, 1917.
This brings the seasonal snowfall this year to 12.6 inches, the fourth snowiest on record. If we get to 13.3 inches of snowfall, we'll move up into third place.
It's quite possible we'll meet or exceed that.
The low pressure system responsible is spinning off just to our west. A secondary short wave (upper level disturbance) over West Texas is heading this way.
Another 2 inches of snowfall could occur after 4:00 a.m.
Plus, to make things more fun ... temperatures, which have been hovering right around the freezing mark, are expected to fall into the upper 20s overnight.
Whatever snowfall or moisture on the ground will freeze, especially on elevated surfaces (bridges and overpasses).
I've taken masses of pictures, will upload them to my poetry (if appropriate) or on Facebook.
