Thank you, Burleson High School, for the Veteran's Day dinner, and for choosing two of my poems to be read for the event. Truly honored. =]
When RSVP-ing for the annual Veteran's Day celebration and dinner Burleson High School puts on, I told Miss May that I write poetry. She asked me if I had any about Veteran's Day.
Do I ever.
She asked if I would be kind enough to send her some; she would read and then choose a couple to be read by students.
I was honored to be asked.
When I got to the High School this evening, she asked if I would read one aloud. I'm not the type who likes to get in front of a crowd and speak. Have always had trouble reading in front of people. Get all tang tongue-led.
Nervous? Yes. Oh, boy. Was I ever.
I just knew I was going to fall up the stairs or drop the microphone. LOL
But I soldiered on, like any good Veteran would. =]
The poem I chose to read out loud is 'Collaborated Sadness.' I repost it here:
'Collaborated Sadness' (c) 2007, Karla Dorman
The sky is crying; tears are falling
from the lowered lids
of the clouds, dripping from my lashes
in weeping poems
of collaborated sadness. Seems
to be the only
thing paying tribute to the fallen
who feel no more ... they
are not the enemy, as some in
the media would
have you to believe. They are brothers,
sisters, fathers, sons,
mothers, daughters, these soldiers, some who
have given all. I
will remember and so will the sky ...
Another poem, 'Thank You,' was read by a student.
That one reads,

Some of the sky falls
as tears
as God
above remembers
those that
Man has forgotten.
He reads the tombstones;
the names
blur as
His eyes overflow -
far too
many have paid the price.
And yet, Man forgets
the high
cost of
freedom that allows
him to
buy another drink.
A long weekend off -
brought to
you by
the blood of soldiers
that died
for you and for me.
Go on! Celebrate!
You have
that right -
as for me, I will
choose to
thank our Veterans:
For your sacrifice,
thank you.
For the
freedoms I enjoy,
and for
your service, thank you.
Both seemed to be well received, and I am grateful. =]
Oh! What was for dinner? Chicken Fried Steak (without gravy, for me, anyway), mashed potatoes, green beans and salad, and a dinner roll. For desert, your choice of pecan, cherry or apple crumble pie. Beverages provided were water, iced tea, or coffee.
Don't eat sweets, so had another roll. LOL
Gonna have to let out the buttons on my fatigues. LOL Ate too much. =]
