Dreams In a Chanson Francaise

It is late morning on a Saturday and I have just returned
from the supermarket.The Elm trees that line the surrounding
streets sway back and forward in the May breeze as the cars
from the main road at the bottom of the street snarls in the
distance.The main road,always busy and often impossible to
cross. A TV documentary from last night comes to mind
bringing back memories of the once dominant chanson
Francaise ,heard these days so very little on mainstream
French radio.The vocals of Juliette Greco and Barbara ,
their songs often with interesting often mysterious
lyrics.The music recalls the the Paris of the 1950s in
particular the left bank and the Bohemian lives of the
authors,poets and musicians who once inhabited its streets
and drank coffee in its bistros.If I had been around in the
post war years I am sure I would have gone to Paris and
expressed my creativity through the ambience that then must
have prevailed.The harsh vocals of Piaf,the intensity of
Brel that progressed into the 60s and the sultry melancholy
of Francoise hardy.The advent of Rock and roll and pop from
Britain and USA of course had a huge impact on French
chanson in the 1960s and singers such as Johnny Halliday and
Sylvie Vartan rose to prominence as French rock idols .
Several chanson singers gave up unable to keep pace with the
changing music scene others like Brel and Greco simply
ignored it and carried on regardless with continuing
success.Traditional French chanson merged with the new music
from Britain and the states to create a new genre -French
pop.which replaced chanson francaise as the most popular and
dominant genre in the country.
No doubt that modern Paris bears as much resemblance to the
city of the 50s as the London of 2015 does to the elegance
of the sentimental London of the films Park Lane and We`ll
Gather Lilacs or the quirky Ealing comedies such as
Passport To Pimlico.
It is often intersting to ponder at time and where it will
take us how our actions and where we end up will influence
other which in turn influences the creative and spurs on
creativity in music or literature,art etc.A long way from
the Parisian left bank I can hear the strains of Toutes Les
Filles Et Garsons de mon age -a classic 1960s French hit-
in my ears and I dream of how I might have led my life as a
creative young author in the existentIalist shadows of Jean
Paul Satre on the Left Bank.
