We Are In Arcadia

The River Loises flows quickly through the valleys of Arcadia
having sprung to life as a stream in the mountains,once home
to the formidable often vengeful Gods of Ancient Greece .It
was in this river that the half man,half animal God Pan once
played.Often idyllic in parts and surrounded by placid
verdant trees in remote tranquil fields the river winds its
way through the heart and soul of Arcadia ,the very core of
Greek mythology .On looking up to the mountains from the
flat valleys it is easy to imagine the omnipotent Gods
looking down on a populace,weak at their mercy.Unlike the
Judeo -Christian God they were not fountains of love
,compassion and kindness but personages to be feared who
served different purposes and often displayed multiple and
contradicting personalities.They were worshipped and their
action filled the ancients with dread ,that is until they
climbed the mountains in search of their deities and found
that there was nothing there .
The mountains and valleys of Arcadia are dotted with many
fine looking towns and villages that have changed little in
the last century .They have seen huge numbers of their
children emigrate to Australia and the USA as well as a
mass exodus to the great metropolis of Athens .In the
sleepy backwaters that lie far from the madding crowds of
Athens or Patras unshaven ,old men in their closing years
sits with cobboloi and ouzo at hand and watch the days go
by while the delicious aroma of fresh bread baked in the
same manner for the last two to three hundred years, drifts
from the "fournos" of the local bakery .
The small industrial town of Megalopolis sits ,nervously
,in a valley;destroyed by an earthquake on several
occassions it is built in ugly stark concrete.It boasts an
ancient theatre and a dirty polluted sky .The towns that
lie further up the mountain slopes such as Dimitsana
,Andritsens and Stemnitsa offer a far more picturesque
angle to Arcadian towns .They cling in their simple
Hellenic beauty to the slopes replete with Turkish houses
and Byzantine church spires.On the green ,grassy pastures
that line the mountain side ,sheep graze in a postcard
scene that could be mistaken for Switzerland .This is all a
far cry from the touristy ,sun traps of Corfu ,Mykonos or
Halkidiki and life takes on a slow ,unhurried air .The
country lanes are punctuated by small roadside cafes and
tavernas which are popular at Sunday lunchtimes and
Saturday nights when locals consume roasted ,chops, beef
and plenty home made retsina ,which often has a quirky
litlle kick.
Villages like Leonthari and Rootsi reflect the nature of
the province in their sleepy haven,traditional houses and
Byzantine remains with a pinch of Ottoman still around .
Arcadia has become a byword for a heaven of sorts,in
English literature such as Charles Ryders first Year at
University in the Oxbridge of Waugh`s Brideshead Revisited.
Now the pleasant sunshine accumulating strength soothes the
land in Arcadia.
