Human Nature Reigns Supreme in Covid Days 2/6/2021 12:56:09 PM
Never before have I witnessed the extent to which people display their inner souls as during these pandemic days A retired PR/media relations specialist for over 40 years, I certainly had the opportunity to meet, greet and though the flesh with thousands and thousands of people, so I believe I have a pretty good grasp on human nature. And, not unlike poor Moses who went prematurely grey because of God's chosen children almost drove him mad. That didn't happen to me; I'm the only one who can drive myself crazy - or, perhaps, one of my favorite 12 personalities - all charming!
When I was interviewed once by an up-and-coming puppy reporter in Santa Monica and asked to what I attributed my success as a PR diva, I blew it and told her the truth: I didn't like people, so being superficial (not my nature) and giving the egomaniac clients what they wanted (publicity in any way shape or form) was a piece of cake.
While I, personally, could not relate to their lack of self esteem and egocentricity, my training and experience allowed me to distance myself and do what I did best: expose these creatures in the best light possible and spin any negatives into fascinating and believable positives.
Most people, I learned, very early in life and certainly in my career, basically sheep and will follow rather than lead. Most people are not strong, self-sufficient, confident, assertive (much less aggressive) and certainly not disciplined. They prefer to take the easy way out and let other not only do the thinking for them - but the work.
People can be incredibly selfish - like now.
We would not be in this hell of a pickle if, a year ago, we had buckled down together and took on Covid 19 the way we did Japan when they attacked Pearl Harbor. And, still, in spite of the fact that we've lost hundreds of thousands of Americans and will lose even more, people still persist in being selfish and not cooperating either with mask wearing, social distancing and playing "by the rules."
Are we surprised?
It is really a sad state of affairs, but not all people, thank God, feel that way - and we are so very, very grateful. We have many heroes all around us and the vaccine is here.
I'm beyond judgment, anger and frustration and have arrived at a point of radical acceptance, seeking understanding, compassion and, yes, even love for people who view this pandemic differently than I.
"Forgive them for they know not"... may be more than just words; there's deep truth to that.
Like Tiny Tim Said, "Bless us one and all," or something like that...
