Peek-a-boo Tales of Tres early walks in boston 8/2/2024 4:46:50 AM
Tres early walks in friendless Boston gives a new meaning to counting your blessings Methinks it was Thoreau who said something about most people living lives of quiet desperation and I know for a fact he's right on. At least, and, for sure, in "super friendless" Boston where I happily reside since transplanting from CA in 2008. Reversal of fortune and all that... and, yes, I'm very, very grateful for everything in my life. No ungrateful bitch here. Just a former Rich Bitch who, still, forgets to cook her own meals and do her own laundry. Sonia ain't around to do it anymore...
So, to beat the heat and high humidity during this heat wave that keeps me from hitting the gym (my Temple) as I do daily, I'm getting up really early in the AM and waling through the beautiful Public Garden in Boston, ever-so-grateful for its lake and, being so very early, lack of people. Only bodies around are homeless who slept there overnight and serious runners. Now and then, being so early, I might spot a walker or two. Truth be told, not tooo smart and safe to go there so early. At least not before 6:00 - in the summer. But I need the endorphins.
On the way back I stopped at Whole Foods to get a banana and a couple for my neighbors who sit on the benches outside, not showered, depressed. Alice and Walter. Bless'em...
This morning, while getting the bananas, a well-dressed Beacon House old man was getting bananas and putting them in his pockets. Mmmm... I so wanted to 1)give him a plastic bag and/or 2)a $1 to purchase them. He had a large shopping cart but I guess he just liked to store his bananas in his pocket. I decided to mind my own business. Just happened to mention it to a couple of employees in the produce department (couldn't resist) and they didn't care. I reminded myself to mind my own bees' was.
Before I cashed out with cashier Karla, I was approached by an African American lady with a T-shirt that read "Life is Good," so I told her I really liked it. She smiled and thanked me. I moved on...
After buying my bananas, she approached me and asked me if I could buy the meal she was carrying and I told her I only had $1. As I stepped out, I checked my fanny pack and found $1 in quarters (surprise!) and went back to look for her and give her the quarters. By then, the manager and a security person were talking to her. I heard the Mgr. tell her that, just for once (she claimed she'd just gotten out of the hospital) he'd let her have the food free but not the drink. I quietly handed her the quarters and walked away.
The well-dressed banana stealer, no doubt, continued to shop at pricey (and wonderful) Whole Foods in my ritzy 'hood.
From now on, I'm going to concentrate on minding my own bees' wax because in Boston, that's the best way to be. Holy Crap! Never too late to learn...
'Tis Boston, after all: not Santa Monica, not Pacific Palisades, not Beverly Hills anymore, but Boston. Give'em sports; give'em beer!!
