2:00 A.M.

I can feel your hand wrapped in mine
My body's warmth flowing to you
Hear your gentle breathe sounds
Smell your hair
Know that with you
I'm at peace

REALITY CHECK

Two o'fuckin'clock in the morning
Laying solo on a lumpy matress
Stretched on a dead spring bunk
Circa 1950
The breathing sounds
Are three guys snoring
The scent's soaring from Sam's socks

CONCLUSION

The middle of the night
Reality has a noxious stench
Cacophanous sound
Terminal lonliness
Dreams have you
I'll return to them
Shortly after

2:00 A.M.

I wrote this while living at the state facility for homeless Veterans.

Dreams are the perfect counter balance.
When things are going rough your dreams are often of better places.
But when life is ok then you dream of nightmares.....Go figure.
Great write. the despair was so tangible

ow, Roger - this hurt...but it needed to be said today...interesting to read the
comments on this - much more real than the news coverage of ceremonies.

I have been not in the VA facilty but in the Salvation Army shelters, and they don't smell any better there. Of course these were the lucky nights. Things used to get a lot worse unde the bridge when the rain was pouring down and I ws filty dirty and on the run. Those sure wern't the good old days. But there used to be so many of them.
These times are not pleasant memrories, but not as bad as tonight when my soul was shredded. Bill

Reality is how we must live,
but never forget your dreams.

Interesting bio -
and thus, this extremely creative poem! Well done.
PS - Us vets have to stick together - i've been "pushed" there too! But, not for long, cause i keep fighting back from nowhere!
The street is not a destination - its where some of us live! An American Disgrace!

Hello, Roger(as I scan back and forth to see your picture! Got mine fixed!). Your piece, well, it's so "human", so impossibley apropos to this world, it hits between the eyes with a punch to the conscience I won't soon forget. My father was a Veteran, but died from alcholism long after he served, yet, too soon for me...shocking sort of piece, reaving peace...
