For a minute I thought old Jersey Ed was visiting us on the west coast for the Rose Bowl parade but then I realized it was something else. This stretch of sidewalk where I take a daily walk at lunch is near where I work and serves as a shortcut to a local equestrian trail. Riders use it because the adjacent street is very busy and its use would be …..equinicidal.

Poem Artwork

Of all the things to slow my gait

Pedestrian speed bumps in LA

They didn’t exactly fall from trees

These road apples made from hay

They’re as American as apple pie

Garden treasures from a steed

Unless of course they’re Arabian

I didn’t witness the fateful deed

Perhaps it was a Palomino

But certainly not Mr. Ed

Unlike our famous den mate

That talking horse is dead

I’m sure it wasn’t a Clydesdale

They quit the Rose Parade

And the evidence on the sidewalk

Is less than they’d have made

It couldn’t be a Mustang

The emissions left behind

Would violate the standards

That California has in mind

It must have been a Lipizzan

The ones that love to prance

Who else could have set the stage

To make us do a sidewalk dance

I guess is doesn’t matter

Such things don’t me disturb

There must not be an etiquette

For taking horses to the curb

Can you imagine New York City in 1900? Since we can no longer tolerate sidewalk debris of any kind I suggest that one of those enterprising inventors out there come out with a under horsetail apple catcher. They can come to me for the patent rights. ;-)

Giggle....I agree it should have been picked up. Dogs get a bad name around our city...but it's because some owners just don't pick up after them! Loved your fun poem, Patrick!

Mr. Ed Says:

I sure hope you scooped it all up,
And took it home, to your garden;
One of the best fertilizers around,
What a Christmas gift you were given!

Yeah, why'd Clydesdales quit the Rose Bowl parade? However, I've often wondered about those walking behind.
