For the first time since 1953 the New Years day Rose Parade will be without the Anheuser-Busch Clydesdale float. A spokesman for AB, now foreign owned by InBev, a Belgian Brewing conglomerate said “We’re leaving to better focus our sponsorships on events that relate more to beer drinkers, more specifically to our brand.” Translation: Events featuring bikini clad girls with a minimum 38DD bust line.

Mind you, I’m all for 38DD and frankly, I’ve never attended the parade despite the fact I live within 30 miles of it, nor can I recall the last time I actually watched the whole thing on TV. And Budweiser is my mainstay beverage of choice. But still, such an iconic betrayal deserves comment and speaks poorly of corporate image, responsibility, and the effects of selling ownerships of American companies to foreign enterprises.

Apologies to Don McLean

A long long time ago

I can still remember how that brewer used to

Make me smile

And I knew that they had a chance

That they could make those people dance

And maybe they’d be happy for a while

But November came and made them shiver

With every story they’d deliver

Bad news on the TV’s

There’d be no more horseys

I can’t remembered if I sighed

When I heard about the Clydesdale’s ride

But something grabbed me deep inside

The day the brewsic died

So, bye bye Miss American Pie

Drove my Charade to the parade

But the parade was dry

The sponsors explained

They had a reason just why

Now into my tainted beer mug I cry

Into my tainted beer mug I cry

So have you now become so poor

Your sponsorship you must ignore

If the Belgians tell you so

Do you believe in loyalty’s past

Can such shortsighted policy last

And can you teach me how to weasel real

Fast

Well I know that you’re in love with them

‘Cause I saw you filmin’ in the gym

It’s not like we are rubes

Man, you like their giant boobs

Now at a hockey game you’ll wet their puck

On a big beer bottle you’ll have them suck

Somehow I knew we were out of luck

The day the brewsic died

I started singin’

So, bye bye Miss American Pie

Drove my Charade to the parade

But the parade was dry

The sponsors explained

They had a reason just why

Now into my tainted beer mug I cry

Into my tainted beer mug I cry

A parody for our times. For all times, actually. Don McLean nailed it with a couple of good songs. When we look back on the amount of Americana lost to corporate greed it is outstanding. However, it is we, the consuming public that always jumps to the next greatest thing and leaves the old standby in the dirt. We are quickly becoming a global economy and have to face the facts that everything is not American anymore–not even Apple pie.

Clearly, you are the master.

Can I just say how horrified I am by these men coming up with boobs of mythic proportions? They are mixing up a potent brew of image related eating disorders for we American females. Not so in Europe, thankfully, but in America...oh good grief!
Happy New Year Patrick!

Super job, as always. Thanks Dick

PS: someone should notify the Billings Symphany. He's scheduled to perform with them on New Years Eve at the Alberta Blair Theater

Damned sad if you ask me. It’s getting harder and harder to find American-owned companies and American products to purchase, and so many of the once great old American Classics are now gone. We have become a Foreign-Owned nation. That good old once ‘All American Chevy’ also now has Chinese and Korean parts in it, and even our Oil Spills are now foreign-made.

I quit drinking Bud when it became Un American, and as I sit here this morning staring at my ‘Made in China’ Christmas tree, you’ve got me thinking about The Good Old Days in our nation. Even Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream is now Foreign-Owned. Damned sad if you ask me. And now our ‘leaders’ are very eager to let foreign-owned uranium mining companies destroy our American Grand Canyon.

Bye-Bye, once beloved and respected Grand Canyon
I drove my foreign-made Chevy to it, but it was gone,
Just like just about everything else, once all American.
Them foreign boys were there, drinkin foreign beers,
And the whole damn thing, sure made me wanna cry.

The way we're selling America to foreign investors it won't be long before we're singing, "THE DAY THE U.S.A. DIED."
Very well said, Patrick.

love the line "drove my Charade to the parade"... I hear Don is turning on over in his grave... or maybe he is just turning on! Good one, anyways, Patrick.

Well, as we discussed in an earlier poem of yours:Guess the people marching behind the Anheuser-Busch Clydesdale float won't have to worry about stepping into a huge, steaming pile of Clydesdale... You know!
Really what does it cost them? So, no shit, they've got the float and the horses so what the hell would it cost them?
