THE BALLAD OF THE BATTLE OF ISANDLWANA song lyrics
by Joel Sattler

on New Year's Day were deep in the veldt
chasing the Zulus across living hell
we did not know this year was our last
now all that is left is a dream of the past

Colonel Henry Pulleine commanded our troops
as we chased Khoza across the field
he would not stop he would not yield
till we gave up our lives and what's left of our youth

the Zulu were a race oh so proud
but we thought we were one with fate
we were sure we could put them to rout
but their resolve we underestimate

we followed them to the Isandlwana plain
thirteen hundred men fully armed to the teeth
they buffaloed us again and again
till we fell back and fell beneath

Cetshwayo hoped the Brits would make peace
and our defeat he took as a gift
the War of the Zulus would finally cease
and finish us off at the fort at Roark's Drift

but English arms and the Empire endured
and South Africa was meant to be ours
but history, history is a lie
except to those who must suffer and die

and so this is a lesson to learn
that odds in war were meant to be burned
the greatest general's best foresight
is not worth a private's the following night
