Two Days Too Late

“I’m going to fight for you…”
Of all the things you could’ve done…
You did this.

You always wanted to be the hero,
You thought the war would make you one…
You didn’t know that already you were.

I never thought that something that was supposed to protect me,
Could cause me so much fear,
But it did when I saw that soldier walking up the driveway.
Of all the things that could’ve happen…
It did.

That day in September

Saturday and Sunday were a blur.
Then Monday, the post came hailing a letter
From you…

“Will you marry me?”
Of all the things you could’ve said…
You picked that.
Two days too late.

I’ll never wake up from this nightmare.

I should’ve kissed you one more time.
I would’ve said yes.
I could’ve stopped you…somehow.
But I’ll never get that chance…

And now…I lay alone.
With nothing but a tear-stained letter and your I.D. tags to keep me warm.

Nothing but pictures…
To show your son where he gets his beautiful eyes,
And stories…
To tell him about you so he can go to sleep without crying.

His daddy was a Hero,
That came home two days too late…

AWESOME my Dearest daughter!!

You will need to tell me about this one. It makes the heart heavy. War is Hell and the affect on our personal lives is more extreme. This is touching and sad but just the way life deals a hand at times.

Love you!!!
Mother
