Breakfast at the Diner

Eggs over light,
sausage, home fries, wheat
toast, marmalade,
coffee black:
Monday ritual at the South Jersey diner.

Outside the window in the morning fog,
Route 30: a narrow river,
Crabtown River,
my river; me
a skinny boy of thirteen
paddling his homemade kayak,
slicing the water pretty as you please.

At the point the muddy river empties
into Chesapeake Bay,
an oyster boat appears low in the water,
Uncle Williard at the helm,
heading home;
and in celebration of the day’s haul,
two crew members swing me into the bay.

I surface leaning on the star-
board rail of a navy destroyer escort,
dolphins racing us into Okinawa's harbor.
At the scream of a kamikaze that barely misses,
the dolphins disappear…

I’m alone on the Jersey boardwalk
studying the sea, counting
the waves that break and ripple to shore.
A noisy gull lights on the boardwalk;
we discuss things.

The fog lifts.

I too, have always been able to lift myself out of the fog banks of the past by meandering beside the calming whispers of the ocean tides and by watching the seagulls who have the audacity to start and then to resolve their questionable squabbles with one another so easily. There is much to be learned from time spent lost in the solitude of a seaside stroll. I truly enjoy your writings. Thanks for sharing. Shay

Gene - A pleasant surprise to run across your site. Loved Breakfast at the Diner and how the poem plays with time. You gave me more than I expected. Especially liked the part about the thirteen year old being dumped in the bay to:

...surface leaning on the star-

At the scream of a kamikaze that barely misses,
the dolphins disappear…

You're on my tracker and I'll be back to explore more. - David

You are making me so homesick that I am going to have to make a trip home this summer just to inhale the ocean air! So vivid, clear and precise right down to the greasy spoon diner's food. Keep them coming.....

Be always safe,
Karen

Kinda hard to add to what 'nessa' said; I agree totally with her review. You took us on some marvelous reminiscing, Gene; thoroughly enjoyed! I'll have some crisp bacon rather than sausage, 'tho, thank you :o)

I tend to always call gulls that land close to me, Jonathon, as in J. Livingston Seagull and from there we start to converse...like the ocean they are very good listeners aren't they...Ed & Rufuz
