Detour to the Dark Side.

Riding a scotch high
down
a twisting
river road past
midnight,
his grip tightens
on the steering wheel
in sync
with the pressure of his foot
on the accelerator.
He convinces himself
he is chasing
meaning
in a meaningless time,
waiting perhaps
around the next curve
or the next
in the tree with his name on it.

Silence shatters
in the mirror
above the dashboard:
the familiar face glares at him,
screams
the ugly sound of rage.
He trembles,
sees himself in the agony
of his limits.
He listens to what he sees;
he hears madness.
He breaks the glass,
disappears in the cry.

In the headlights
purple eyes
devour the mist.
Gods of another age,
another plane,
guide him,
automatic cruise,
into the empty night
beyond
the threat of the winding river.

"Silence shatters in the mirror above the dashboard--" Awesome.
You really get caught up in this. Makes you start reading faster than you can think... in a good way. :)

This poem reminded me of a person fed up with their life & driven to end it using a vehichle with the courage often seemingly found in the bottom of a bottle booze. It's sad to crash to such a death as to drown in a river/lake/ocean after drowning in alcohol. Very evoking poem of pain, and truely these things happen for many people.
Your dark side is emotionally powerful in your pen too Gene.

Gene - I felt the windings of the road and the atmosphere of night and the "rage". Especially liked the lines:

In the headlights
purple eyes
devour the mist.
Gods of another age,
another plane,
guide him,
automatic cruise,
into the empty night

you poetically tagged this rage topic Gene, many times I've been behind my steering wheel driving feeling the stresses, when it gets real bad I talk to God, been doing this for years, it calms the beast, whoed love to feast

I've felt anger like that more than once after returning from Vietnam. One time it was on a mountain road driving like a maniac. For me, instead of the threat of a winding river, I had the threat of a drop of several thousand feet down a mountainside. This poem reminded me of that moment of rage, a rage that I have spent most of my life combating and holding inside what sometimes feels like a pressure cooker. It is surprising what kind of memories surface (that you thought were forgotten) from the powerful language of a poem like this one. Maybe I should return to that mountain drive and see if I can capture it again. Poetry is a way to let the pressure out a little at a time.

Oh, my - chillingly penned, Gene, very well done! A victim of his own rage - sad to say, this is true for many -

the staccato abrupt lines add to the delirium, the brusque tone, the dark mirror piece as a w.hole- --perception is deception; or is it only our.selves the other way around? this is so circular and warped. .. .a weave of torn fabric in the soul of a man. .. . barely hanging by a thread. ...
plus+ i love the italics:: like hearing within the mind, within the fall from grace. .. .
a harsh de.composition. .
a grim grip on that wheel indeed.

It is always so amazing and so intriguing to me to experience the various, sometimes polar facets of a writer's personality - each of us with our light and darker sides - wearing our hearts on our sleeves, perceiving, relaying. Empaths with a poetic pen journeying through life's experience giving others a glimpse into the human soul like an offer to open up and really "feel." This is a magnificent poem, Gene.
