Gianetta's Grand Masquerade

Nearly sundown
Saturn and Venus entertain

the full moon.

I feel the rush of salt water around my ankles
as the evening surf recedes...

my naked feet sucked into cool wet sand,
sinking ever deeper
into the metered rhythm of the ebbing tides
captured by the moon.

The touch of her hand on my bare shoulder
rescues me
from the rippling spell of lunar light,

reminder that time is running out:
we obliged to attend a ceremonial dinner,
Gianetta adorned in the finest silks from Turkestan,
me in my purple diviner’s cassock,
celebrating the resurrection of Plutarch’s
Mother of the Universe,

the full moon venerated by the Sioux,
as the old woman who never dies,
and romanced by Keats as passion’s poesy,

hiding now behind the veil
of Wordsworth’s textured cloud, her
invitation this night
to dine and rejoice in vintage wine
the color of moonlight,

attended by the music of the spheres
and Gianetta’s
moonstruck masquerade of faceless dancers.

Absolutely STunning Gene, as Gianetta's heart soul shines through your loving guiding lines!
Your visuals brought me there over and over... Thank YOU! The salty ocean and her way of healing from inside out....
Your heart is pure! as the evening moon endures....
WRITE ON!

My sixteen year old daughter loves walking in the surf like that with her toes mingling with the wet sand. I'm currently watching the HBO series on Rome. I'm renting it from Hollywood video and your last line reminds me of a scene from the series with masked, faceless dancers entertaining Ceaser and his niece after he has taken Rome with his legions.

Gene, this is beautiful. Not only was I able to see you in my mind, but I could feel the mood of the moment perfectly. Excellent! Really. ~ Sara

deep, complex, well thought out and written masterpiece. Gianetta´s Grand Masquerade ranks high among the classicals, along with Coleridge´s "Rime of an ancient mariner" and Wordsworth "Intimations of Immortality". Your poetry is reminiscent of the early romantic poets
My hat off to you beatiful bard of long ago

A beautiful rendition spin-off from Faceless Dancers. Ms. Ellis writes highly intelligent poetry and her environmental perspective adheres to all faces of Gaia...you've done her proud, Gene...

Funny how the muse moves upon us, almost as if we are pre-destined to accomplish certain things at certain times. This incorporates much Gene. Soothing imagery. Your mention of Plutarch (man, I haven't read him since college) and Wordsworth and Keats, for some mysterious reason, gives this write a kind of depth that breaths soulful in the senses.

You are a gentleman who has blessed a fine artist.

Gene, you have left me breathless with this stunning write that I will treasure for all time to come. I have printed it on ivory linen paper and plan to matt and frame it. It is beautiful as is the heart of the man who produced it. To say that I'm honoured seems so inadequate. Thank you, thank you, thank you...........

Did I say 'thank you'?

Good to get this invite for you to dress up and masquerade. Gianetta's worth it to take her on a trip like this and dressing up is so much fun and gives you a lift. An uplifting poetry write here too.
