Change of pace, c. 1980.

Out to lunch
a muggy July Monday,
nowhere special to go.

Moving with the signal:
walk, don’t walk,
darting, defying the rolling metal,
breathing heavy
and wondering why
he is running to get somewhere,
doesn’t know where,
nowhere special to go.

Leaning into stride, weaving, stumbling
into bargain books, stopping
to rest at a table marked ninety-nine cents,
mostly junk,
blowing away the dust,
picking up a poet he never heard of
plus tax,
stepping into stride again,
rushing to get somewhere,
doesn’t know where,
nowhere special to go.

Marching to the dissonance of horns on horns
and squeals of rubber on concrete
and sidewalk fiddlers and pneumatic drills
and the quicktime cadence of his heartbeat,
halting, eyes facing front:
coming straight at him, familiar face
of a thousand nights
and maybe a thousand more.

Coming straight at him, shaded eyes
that seem to focus through his eyes and flash
motion pictures on his mind,
coming straight at him, unguarded smile
that smiles first,
passes by too quickly.

Reaching out, touching nothing,
crying out as a mute cries out:
come back, come back.
Standing as a fool,
watching her silent hello disappear in the crowd,
lingering
for a last look at love that never lived
except in pasteboard on a bedroom wall.

The crowd pushing him on to somewhere,
he doesn’t know where,
he has nowhere special to go.

Sometimes we are afriad to grab hold and the chance is gone. There is sadness within your lines gene. Thank you for sharing.

Masterfully written Gene! Amazing how many moments we let pass us by, that could have been meant for us,but we're too hesitant to find out...ET

Good Morning Gene,
This reminds of of Chances...there maybe another one later on after that Chance...but sometimes there is never another Chance...or is there? Are there always Chances to come...if we keep failing to grab hold of the Chances that come our way? If we keep letting Chances walk away...?
Wonderful Write To Probe My Mind For A Poem of Chance...I better take this Chance, because I would be very upset if another poem didn't come my way :)
Much Love & Happiness To You...and Lots More Chances!!

Never much liked city living, though I don't mind reading about it...get yourself down to the beach, on a weekday when it is less crowded...Ed & Rufuz

Mind and body struggling with the reality of the street, the sense of outsider strong, of being marginal palpable, and a moment when the meaningful or hoped for happens...so well conceived and articulated and very moving. Excellent atmosphere and excellent writing.

I enjoyed the flowing style and words to this write. Enjoyable read. Says lots. The poster on the Wall is sort of left behind.

Those old books are great literary highs. They're laced with an intoxicating fungus - why just the smell of an old book can feed the senses! Poster on the Wall peels the autographed corners of the mind Jane Russell lying spreadeagle in all of her voluptuousness, seductively chewing on a piece of straw. This is a good anecdote to stop and smell the pages...a slow stroll next time, Gene...

Sage

A well done snapshot of what it is like to go for a walk in a city of busy town--the nose--I could hear it. Also, the story of my life when I see a cute girl while taking a walk. The ending is the same too. We dream on and the next walk seems to end the same way.
