in wet sand he scrawls:
she is the words he writes,
the dreams he dreams,
the engine of his thoughts.
she is the rhythm of his heart.
she who thinks she knows him
knows him not,
for if she knew,
would she not laugh?
would she not cry,
silly man, act your age?
he asks a nearby gull,
who’s counting?
the gull, in its fashion,
ignores him
and disappears on a squawk.
stars appear in a sting of music,
and the vision of his nights
emerges from the sea…
and with a flourish, she sings
what does age have to do with love?

Age is an illusion; an old body can hide a young heart, and some youths will never grow young, will never take flight on the wings of freedom. Here's to inter-generational romance!

And may I add, What does love have to do with age? True love sometimes has its genesis in our youth but it needs time to ripen, like wine or cheese. Takes time to mellow and deepen, and to permeate the soul. I like this poem very much Gene. Hugs, J'nia

The only thing age has to do with love is to make it deeper, wider, stronger, better understood, more appreciated . . . and on and on . . .

I love your words, Gene. There is something very mystical about this poem - it's beyond romance. It washes over me with the promise of eternal connection.

This is really beautiful, Gene. I like the pairing of the phrases "rhythm of his heart " and (especially) "engine of his thoughts". Stars appearing on a "sting of music" is also a very interesting line, and the mention of a nearby seagull is a nice touch. The last line is very moving and enfolds the whole piece nicely. I like how this is rather short but still tells an intriguing story.

Action/thriller for sure, but romance, nostalgia, love and longing, too, in great measure, Gene.
I see you by the shore remembering, composing, imagining the mermaid of dreams.

Absolutely nothing! A person's soul loves on after many lifetimes, and it has no age preference for love has no boundaries, it is pure and wild and fresh no matter when it hits...You have been bitten hard, my dear man..Seek her and follow your soul's yearnings.

Much peace, love and light,

Love stirs the sea urging it to provoke a melody of doubts and questions without answers. The sand retains its will only until the surf returns to write questions anew. But the sea never erases the love, clinging tenaciously to the grains of wetted sand. Love! No more powerful magic nor understanding stirs within creation. And I? I love your poem. Conference frequently with the gulls and the sea. They bring out the creativity of seasoned poet within you my dear friend. May peace and love be with you. Jon Michael

This speaks of experience, which I have also known. When my mother was almost 90, she said in the mornings when she woke up, she still felt as if she were 14 then she looked in a mirror.

When there is no mirror around, I feel young too. Falling in love, even for old fools like me, doesn't recognize age. Passion lives with every waking and sleeping breath.

Beautiful poem.

your gulls still have a light, easygoing magic, and, although it may not be the greatest fashion, such magic is hard to find, that hasn't tired rhe poem all out of spirit.

'the gull, in its fashion,
ignores him
and disappears on a squawk.
stars appear in a sting of music,' - majestic, too; and scene.

thank you!
