According to the cycle of the seasons,
Winter (Water) is used to be ruined
By springtime (Wood) when it comes
While the latter yields to summer (Fire)
Which finishes its phase of reigning
With the late summer (Earth)
In the yearly centre to be felled
By autumn (Metal) and buried then
In winter underground to stick it out.
Thus Water (winter) begets Wood (spring)
While the latter gives rise to Fire (summer)
Which produces Earth (the late summer)—
Good parent of Metal (autumn).
When Metal is cool it sweats to put Water
At the head of the annual circle
Or Oneness, also known as ‘four in one’
When the yearly destruction
Alternates with the seasonal rebirth.
