Goddess of Great Mercy

Has a thousand arms

And a thousand eyes. . .

The classic question is:

Which one is the true eye

To see right through

All and every single thing?

For a long time I was unable

To solve this riddle, but

When the other day

I looked at the pine tree

Rooted on the jagged peak

And bent before the cold blast,

Blowing from the seven seas,

I suddenly realized

The true meaning of this.

The point is that all its boughs,

Twigs and every single needle

Bend to the wind

With tremendous submission.

Where this self-forgetfulness

Comes from if not from its strong

And tenacious roots

Nourished freely

On the crisp biscuit cliffs

Beyond the oil mist and milky clouds?!

This reminds me of a tornado that came through this area in 1969. The strong oaks and maples cracked where the willows merely lost some branches. This pine reminds me of the willow trees. Lovely thought.

Love ya!

Great visuals in this poem.

And, survival certainly is the ability to, "bend over backward." But if one does this continuously, we end up stunted like those trees. Sometimes it requires pulling up stakes and moving to a new location. At other times, it requires rebellion because otherwise things will never change.

I like this poem, especially the beauty of the last three lines. But a conundrum still has roots, too. Is the true eye the cliff, the root, the wind, the nourishment, the tree? Or some still-mysterious melding of perception with all of these?
Another truth: wherever you were perched, the poem arrived.

Sometimes we have to give a little in order to survive.
