Though the use of toxic chemicals dates back thousands of years, the first large scale use of chemicals as weapons of mass destruction was during World War I (1914-1918).

Passing through the ruined walls Of the burnt down town, The defeated troops have found Some verdant shoots rising up From the exhausted soil. . . The gas attack, again.

While I understand how nature comes back quickly from devastated places like a, "burnt down town, I don't see how there are any lasting affects from a gas attack, unless it poisons the soil.
