The trees are on their healthy roots
To increase their growth rings.
What does not have its solid basis
Year in year out can't be enlarged
And spread around luxuriously. . .
A mature with his great abilities
Uses to accumulate his virtues,
Not to dissipate them; he abides
By substance rather than husks,
And deals with fruits rather than
Flowers, dismissing what is out
And sticking to what is within.
Once again, wisdom in your words. I thought of the ancient oak set in the Seaside Park at Rockport, Texas. After Harvey hit last August, the surrounding oak forest was badly damaged and many trees were down. Fortunately, the 500 year old source of all those other trees was proudly still standing, having weathered many storms like this in the past.
And thus the literary/poetic man has two fires in his body, the strain of his mental work and the overmuch of blood in his head. Man, so rich in knowledge has also become rich in diseases. The greatest wealth is health. Certainly diseases of the soul are more dangerous, and more numerous, than diseases of the body. The gist, and subtext, of your poem seem perfectly clear to me.
