Owl on a Napkin

It was probably a little more than two years ago that we discovered my grandson, Andrew's, artistic abilities. He was seventeen or eighteen at the time.

Poem Artwork

Owl on a Napkin drawing, using a ballpoint pen by my grandson,
Andrew Jordan Thompson.

This kid, Andrew, he created me.
Yeah, he was supposed to be makin' hot dogs.
Instead, he takes out his ballpoint pen,
a napkin from the place there where he works.
and sits there a-sippin' on a mug o' root beer.
Andrew, he starts doodlin' around.
He puts the point o' that pen to the napkin,
and before long I start comin' outta there.
Andrew, he asks me to hold real still
till he finishes puttin' feathers on and stuff.
He makes two big circles for my eyes.
But the thing is, that boy makes me look mean.
He says he don't mean to make me look mean.
And then, of all things, he sticks the tip
of another napkin into his mug o' root beer.
Then he daubs me right on both o' my eyeballs
and turns them a sort o' golden color,
making me look meaner than I did before.
After that he begins to daub me here and there
with that root beer till I have to tell him,
"Hey, Andrew, let's stop with the root beer thing."
Finally, he puts down his ballpoint pen,
throws the root beer napkin in the trash,
and tells me he's all finished.
With that, I look at him really serious and tell him,
"That's the wisest thing you've said all evening."
Later on that night, I sneak a look in the mirror
and I see that Andrew, he don't gimme no feet
to clamp over tree limbs or clutch mice to eat.
I don't know about that boy.
Who-o-o-o does he think he is anyway,
leaving me in a fix like that?

David this is so entertaining to read, whilst at the same time showcasing the immense talent of your Grandson, Andrew...
The drawing of the Owl is spectacular!....and when Granddad and Grandson's lindividual talents are combined ..the result is Wow!
This Owl now has a unique personality and individuality of his own....
He has been given life...
I would love to hear more of his exploits and adventures....
I think he'd enjoy it too!

A wonderful story poem that is a real honor to the creative talent of your grandson. Bursting with pride.

I couldn't help notice that the root beer colors of the ballpoint drawing reminded me so much of June Ripley's watercolors that she had in her home just across the river from Huntington in Ohio.

Does the napkin, tucked in like a bib, have significance? There's a lot of talent in your genes, and in Andrew's. That's a gorgeous owl, and your take on it is very entertaining! You and Andrew must have a lot of fun when you're together.

Great, humorous poetry, David. What wonderful talent this is. Even without feet is a cool owl. he drew him looking mean because it is, after all, a wild thing. I'm sure the rats he captures and devours thinks he is a pretty mean s.o.b.!
