I was just a kid, maybe seven or so, when i learned this little ditty. I remember fondly having my older sister, Adele, or Delie, repeat it over and over for me.

While I suspect the origin might be Irish Folk tune, back then most songs were learned simply by wrote memory - we didn't own much sheet music.

Now, sixty years later, perhaps FIDELITY might be an apt title?

ENJOY!

OOPS! I FOUND IT - OR A LONGER VARIATION - HAD TO CHECK GOOGLE RESULTS FOR ABOUT A HALF HOUR - ATTACHED TO BOTTOM AT ***

Old Tune - JOHNNY - Anonymous
As Remembered by: Tom Hyland - 03-03-08

Hi Mr.  Ed:

Your phrase “me wifey” just reminded me of an old tune -

"OH, Johnny came home the other night, as drunk as he could be,
saw a horse in the stall, where his horse ought to be!

OH, wifey Dear, come over here, explain this thing to me,
what's this horse doing in this stall, where my horse should be?

"OH, you crazy fool, you drunken fool, you're blind and cannot see,
'tis nothing but a milking cow that Momma sent to me!'

OH, I've travelled this wide world over, a thousand times or more,
but a saddle on a milking cow, I never did see before!

OH, Johnny came home the other night, as drunk as he could be,
saw a head on the couch, where his head ought to be!

OH, wifey Dear, come over here, explain this thing to me,
what's this head doing on the couch, where my head should be?

OH, you crazy fool, you drunken fool, you're blind and cannot see,
'tis nothing but a cabbage head, that Momma sent to me!

OH, I've travelled this wide world over, a thousand times or more,
but whiskers on a cabbage head, I never did see before!"

There's another verse, but my ole grey cells only remember these two, as the tune and sing-song melody are from about 60 years ago!

Think I'll now copy & paste this to AD - for Posterity!

Maybe another Ole Fart knows the missing verse?

Pax Tecum ...  Tom.

Oh, how I'd love to hear the ending of this ditty! And weren't many a lore passed on by minstrals of the time. Glad you remember what you have, as it's quite a witty piece, Tom!

I surely don't know the missing verse, but I like it.

Oh Eddie came home one night, as drunk as he could be,

And when me wifey wouldn't let me in, on her car, me did pee!
