Alone in the Twilight
By John Herlihy

I sit alone in the twilight
I am not the first or the last.
Millions have basked in its fading light,
As the sun closes its eye out of sight.
The moment bespeaks of temporality,
An exhalation, a closing, a mortality.
The moment bespeaks of eternity,
An inspiration, an opening, immortality.
It feels endless, this departure of light,
It feels ominous, this arrival of night.
The day seemed white, like bone or cloud,
Night seemed black, like stone or shroud.
My heart feels light, lifted into night air,
My thoughts awaken to utter a prayer.
