- The Spirit of Christmas –

John Herlihy

 

Where, oh where, has the spirit of Christmas gone,

The spirit of future and past suddenly gone wrong.

For one day a year let there be one brief moment,

Full of serenity and peace, in personal fulfillment.

We fill our lives in the wasteful pursuit of idle hours,

We seek happiness in vain dreams of super powers.

Lost in the superficial wonder of a modern identity,

Bereft of any true notion of who we might really be.

Let us remember for one brief moment in the year,

A child who offered his heart on the point of a spear.

Wrapped in ragged, swaddling clothes in a manger,

The one true friend who arrived as a perfect stranger.

To remember the spirit of peace and love we all desired,

To reflect the spirit of Christmas the Christ-child inspired.

Sorry to say, John, that I have long ago lost patience with my fellow 'sentient' higher-evolved creatures, who love and harm equally, on a mere whim. For my two cents, I'm on the side of our supposed 'dumb' animals, who have far more integrity and honesty in their actions than the brightest and most highly placed of our pre-frontally developed species. My rephrasing of the hoary old 'Peace on Earth, etc.' is therefore "Peace on Earth, good will to animals." As for my fellow Homo not-so-sapiens, I say 'Bah, humbug!' (present company excluded). That shared, I will say to you and the others here (as a good pagan), my very best wishes for a pleasant, reflectively meaningful and satisfying Winter Solstice. I personally don't need an erstwhile 'Christ-child' to inspire me to treat others with respect and dignity...just a loving and eternally loyal team of huskies to guide my sled through the icy drifts and across the frozen streams of the new year.

I think the spirit of Christ has gone far beyond its original humble beginnings. Mixed with pagan lore, the current holiday touches almost everyone. Perhaps not in the way that some would wish, but in a way that generally means, "goodwill to all, peace on earth."

John, this poem is so lovely and filled with wisdom. The world stands on a precipice so mind-numbing and yet you offer a simple moment where we can allow a different moment to give us faith and peace.
A perfect poem for this Christmas morning. Love it.
