-- The Moon Waxes, the Moon Wanes --
by John Herlihy
The moon waxes, the moon wanes,
Moonglow shines on window panes.
The dawn awakens, the twilight fades,
Sunlight brightens, dusk pulls the shades.
The sea tides ebb, the sea tides flow,
As gentle winds the wavelets blow.
The tides erase the footprints in the sand,
Washes away by waves cresting little hands.
The old day takes its leave and never returns,
The quiet night beckons as the heart yearns.
Winter’s death yields to the coming spring,
Summer’s warmth budding flowers bring.
The moon waxes, then the moon wanes,
Shining its night light upon country lanes.
