That moment when you catch sight of yourself unexpectedly...

The mirror checked me out today It caught me unaware The face I see Staring back at me Tells a story of despair Upon first glance I’m shocked to see The mask of love, undone The face I see Staring back at me Is drained and overcome It tells a tale of fear and woe Where harmony be sought The face I see Staring back at me Is weary, sad and fraught The eyes are dull, there is no smile The heart-break here is plain The face I see Staring back at me Is full of grief and pain Yes, the mirror checked me out today I was shocked at my demise Because the face I see Staring back at me I just don’t recognise.

As one who has done my fair share of "mirror" explorations in both my novels and poetry, I can attest to the power of reflections, be they from a manufactured ornament hanging on the wall, or the clone-like sense one gets from the quiet water's surface. As your poem reminds us of our ever changing outer wear and tear, it also signals we give our inner self the due it deserves. You've penned a simple and arresting piece of wordsmithing. Thank you.

It's sad that you see yourself this way. From the pictures you post, I see a vibrant, happy woman who loves to write poetry. The sooner you stop beating up on yourself and start loving everything around you, the sooner you will feel free and happy.

What the mirror sees is a reflection of the inner
turmoil taking it's toll on a very tired soul.

what the mirror sees on the surface is temporary it is what is deep inside that makes us what we are in truth. the pain will pass and the you that is will return remember that.
