" Tell me not in mournful numbers
Life is but an empty dream"
- H W Longfellow
A pretty maiden with a tender smile
Walk so dainty, but swiftly crossed a mile
Innocent and comely, she knew not any man
At the tender age of nineteen she betook to betroth
Her mother took pride to sing her praises mainly
To suitors all who came her way o! so many
Some saw her beauty, others her virtue
A comely wife she would have made for any
Many came knocking at her door for sure
Each wished to take her as his lovely wife
Together they would life the simple life like any other
The regular ups and downs a constant however
But destiny was for her to be a virgin and not marry
Her good sense did not prevail so she might
Make up her mind on that what was then right
She chose to differ, so she could never
Set her mind to make the choice for a lover ever
The knight she had seen only in her dreams early
Lean, handsome and spirited he be with hair so curly
Gentle his voice and a frame so sturdy
Pointed nose, intelligent face, signs of good lineage
Came in his armour, swept her off her feet
Kept her awake after her dreams, feeling ecstatic and high
She dreamt of him all over again wide eyed
None of the men gave her so precious a feel
Like he that night in her dreams for her to meant
But for this classic beauty, many sought her hand
Each time she refused, they waited and whined
Years went past, her beauty in vain
Alas! she couldn’t find herself a match
Suitors who flocked now went their way
But she hoped the knight of her dreams will one day appear
Sober, the ample zeal, slighted her soft fair skin
Still delicate her features though
The charm of her youth was not to be
A shadow of her earlier self now she
With a wink in her wide eye, and words wiser she wooed
The mind ethereal, youth far moved
Heart playfully beating for the knight divine
Determined not to move off stage
Never a moment, lost in pursuit
Like a bottle of matured wine she exudes
While women her age at times tangy and sour
On the golden jubilee of her birthday year
She wonders what she missed in life
Heart defying age,
Holds forth with endless hope
This timeless romantic still waits and waits
For the knight of her dreams to come and dance along
