Every month the sun passes from one zodiac sign to another. The transition of the sun from Sagittarus to Capricorn is considered especially auspicious in India and it has a spiritual significance to it. This day is celebrated all over the country on January 14th, The days are longer and nights are shorter now. The sun moves towards the northern hemisphere for the next six months. This is celebrated as Makar Sankranti. This in India is called Uttaryana

                                    Makar Shankranti

Makar means Capricorn   , Sankranti means transition.

Rosy red cheeked, waiting to bloom

Not a cloud  spreading its gloom

Now the Sun alights in  style and   glazed

Rises above the hills  cool and fresh

Along white clouds, the sky stood still

The position of the tropical Sun is  now celebrated

It is a new day when the sun starts moving

To the northern hemisphere for six months

In Utarayana ,the birds sing loud

For it is a day of healthy good beginnings

The golden harvest is rich on this day

As Makar Shankrati festival, it  varies in different region

It could be the sighting of the lamp

In the  deep dark forest of south India

Which is seen for just a few seconds two or three times

Crores of devotees  reach out to witness this sight

Observing forty days of fast and prayers before.

The  colourful event of kite flying ritual is fun and competitive

Colourful balloons spread out  in  sky

It is indeed a mark of devotion to the Sun God,

Reaching out to him in many special ways

Feasting, folk music and bonfires now on

Where the tribals too begin their new year

Anything to keep the spirits high

With scented flowers freshly adorned

Worship the Sun  early morning with a bath and prayers

While little  girls on swing play around

With fun  and  frolic to meet and make merry

Each year to begin  a new journey in life in a new way

For the sun symbolises spiritual light and positive energy

When it is shining brightly

And the corns are swaying lazily

It is time to celebrate a good harvest  for many

A pudding with cereal and sugar

With milk and butter

To appease the Gods and for themselves!

A fair is held where Ganges meet the sea

Lakhs converge to bathe in the river

 And auspicious it is deemed

It is just the day to start a pilgrimage

The path   would  be strewn with light and energy

It did not dither them from taking the plunge

However busy one may be in life

A month long fair  keeps up the pace

The feasts are observed with utmost sanctity

Enjoy  the scenes of  grand display

  Customs enliven lives

Bring   new joy of changing seasons

Any festival is indeed a time to rejoice

Make gay a life and feel happy

I was in Pakistan during that time of the year when the monsoons were gone and the sun shone brightly in the cool winter air, so refreshing. Indeed, a time to rejoice.

There is a lot of culture in this write for many to learn of and to nearly experience the celebrations. Excellent write.

What a wonderful time to celebrate. I haven't heard of this. It would bring such positive emotions to people. I love how you worded this, my friend. You are so good at getting so much detail into your works.
