 Far away from  homeland

Last night in  stadium stands

  Wonderful the collective beats

I heard the people's greeting  sound

  Hissing aloud with the wind

I watched how the  atmosphere light

 Red and yellow colours bright

Blinking shine illuminating the ground

 Each precious  moment   cautious move

At the  focal point , the pulse leapt

All eyes  watched how the ball  stepped

The spirits  up all the while

A picture perfect  postcard sight

As the two lively sides hooked

When  Mexicans  went to taste

The Brazilian delight

In the ground yellow and red

Breaking forth like seeds from a pod!

 The pitch and  fervor rose

The frenzy worked up in grades

I wonder at the man hours

That is thrust  into the game

The ease with which the footballers

Kiss the ground  and bounce back

So frequently tumble down

 Up again with renewed strength

The game , grandeur and the mania

Speak volumes of  great stamina

  Built  firmly over the years

Long live the footballers

Long live the revellers

 On Brazilian soil

This time  as we celebrate

 The passion of the game

Long live the game of football

That  forever  grips  mankind

The Americans still fall short in this sport, interesting to watch the best at it!

Very nice. It's nice when people have passion about something. I'm not much into sports but cheering on your favorite team takes you away from your day to day living. The rhythm in this piece worked so well for what your subject was.

Few games are a bigger waste of time and energy than football except perhaps baseball, basketball, tennis, rugby, boxing, wrestling, golf, polo, horse racing, auto racing, hockey, bad mitten, fencing, chess, skeet shooting, archery, and the various events in track and field. I'll stick to what I know and like--war! :)

I don't understand all the fervor and all the patriotic ballyhoo causing riots and disruption. All for great monetary gain for the puppet masters pulling the strings. We sure do love our games, don't we. Better than real war. Battered and beaten, all the teams go home sadly to their various countries, but still alive. Only one country can claim the world championship and bask under that honor (with all the endorsements it brings) for four years or until some hungry competitor gets better and comes to feast.

Why I don't like team sports. Too much like warfare.
