Is madness simply the total loss of one’s faculties as seen from the outside, or the inner recognition that one’s faculties may no longer be trustworthy?

Is madness simply the total loss of one’s faculties as seen from the outside,

Or the inner recognition that one’s faculties may no longer be trustworthy?

Shivering with the loss of sleep

Chemistry undone

It winks at her

That place between

Sanity and otherwise

You cannot have me

Her flesh is cold

Heating pads

Blankets

Nothing can warm

The mind is feverless

Though the body gripped

Chills not quelled

It holds its breath,

This little interpreter,

Traveling through realms

In soft spots

Of the universe

Where dimensions make way

Did you see me?

I’m not there

She points at Earth’s solar system

Or there

She points at Earth

Or even there

She points at a spot in North America

And probably not there either

She points at a slumbering woman

Then where?

I’m not really sure

Perhaps consciousness

Is a sea of waves

And brains merely receivers

For that which we all share

Though participate willingly

Only when personality is muted

Bluster is shut up

Will power is dormant

Arms are slack

Perhaps being severed upon awakening

Into discrete units

Is bearable to most

A hitch or a hiccup

But too austere to the sensitive

Too much to endure

Senses come to speak

Saying, let’s go back

This isn’t where we belong

She nods

I might miss it though

But what’s to miss

If it’s only a fraction of wakefulness?

While I struggle sometimes with sleep, it is no longer over struggles with individuals at work who treated me badly, but from spasms, itches, aches and pains from being unable to move or even scratch what inches. You are describing another kind of wakefulness. One that comes both night and day with thoughts that are confusing and fighting with one another for attention.

And, the dealing with temperature that I am finding more difficult all the time is certainly a symptom of menopause that women are more generally faced with than men.

As always your poems require thought and sometimes difficulty of comprehension. But as Odin pointed out so eloquently, filled with all kinds of poetic genius.

What Odin said. HaHa
Three weeks ago I thought I could fly. Bad idea.
Mashed my face on the sidewalk and knocked myself cold.
Not a good idea at 3 AM. Now I'm wondering what I might
try when I no longer know who I am. Will anybody care?
Don't answer. Will I care?

As you so deftly point out, there are alternate worlds of nocturnal chaos that cry out to be expressed, understood, and hopefully made productive in the wakeful state. Yet, for your 3rd person protagonist, such results may be difficult to realize. Yet, for such people, often the struggle is served well by finding a means of expression that might reveal and ground the pain and lostness that such emotional conundrums can inflict. Aside from the essence of this gem, the structure that takes us into a number of points of view was a perfect complement to the subtext that abounds with her concern for perception. Deep, yet accessible to any and all.

You speak so many of my thoughts, Danae, especially the beginning "the inner recognition that one’s faculties may no longer be trustworthy." Shivering with the loss of sleep

Chemistry undone

It winks at her

That place between

Sanity and otherwise.

Your brilliance still burns though all. Now I am going back to my heating pad.
