We were with the infantry

Clearing mines from roads.

We built or repaired bridges

So the infantry could go forward.

We were the Combat Engineers

Who fought with the infantry as needed.

We worked without rifles

When repairing bridges.

We worked night and day,

Oft times without any sleep.

Danger was ever present

While removing mines and booby traps.

We were the 288th Combat Engineers

Who fought in France, Holland and Germany,

During WW2  and lived to tell about it,

To our wives and grand kids after the war.
