Trying to sift through the sand
Of my thoughts as it unravels.
Not knowing the time of night
Or the country I'm in each day.
Soldiers marching to a sergeants call,
Keep in step, he would yell.
All this marching for nothing,
As we road most of the way.
Foot soldiers will disagree
And they have cause to do so.
We combat Engineers didn't,
But we did do some walking too.
Our job was specific.
Remove the bombs or traps,
And don't get yourself killed
And others with you.
Danger was ever present,
As our enemy always had new tricks.
And some of us died but saved others,
When the method was discovered.
Worked under enemy fire
But could not fire back.
Too busy working on a bridge
So an Army could pass through.
Carried a rifle that never fired,
It was always too far away.
Had to rely on the infantry
For fire power to save the day.
Combat Engineers were a happy lot,
Not an nerve in their bones.
Some called us crazy
Walking through a mine field.
But we got the job done,
As tanks and soldiers
Got to pass by safely,
Headed for the front.
We were just a few steps
Behind them, ready to do our job.
Maybe we were a little crazy,
But the job had to be done.
A fine soldier..Bravery of the fittest.
All to the men of your company "Bravo"
