I thought that those letters, born from a war resistant people, stopped coming after the Vietnam War became history.
But the same war resistant people has begun to write them again, this time to soldiers in Iraq.
The son of a friend got one...
He wanted to say so many things,
“taking your hand between mine…
I couldn’t shake from my head
that final word called goodbye”
A soldier that’s been send to war
doesn’t think a letter will arrive,
telling Dear John, mark the words,
I am stopping being your wife.
He wanted to say so many things,
but couldn’t, the minutes hang,
like condemned men from gallows
with a reprieve never granted.
His home door finally closed,
before he could tell that “I am sad
for living you to go to a foxhole
like trying my grave for size”
He wanted to say many things, but,
what you can say to a deaf bride?
that bullets can’t kill you, because
her words already took your life?
Oh Georg, I am so sorry that this is happening again. Too many just do not understand how much it hurts, both emotionally and distracting the focus......
Bullets and words can do the same damage to anyones heart. Excellent insight! Something similar happened to me when I was drafted into the Army. It ruined me emotionally for many years.
Blessings ...
Richard
Sad but true fact of life captured so well in this hearbreaker of a write. It is unfortunate but love or the falling in and out of love does not stop when there is a war on.

Georg, a sad but true story about the perils of war...never told as well as you've just penned.
Bad enough to be in the heat of battle, and a letter comes from home, opening up a new war zone...Kathy said it spot on. Better off without them...excellent write that rips the heart and brings tears to the eyes.
Thank YOU for your service, welcome home, soldier, welcome home. *Salute*
Dear John letters - their timing is never good, but what knuckle-headed person would send one to a 'loved' one while in the throes of fighting a war? While it's sad, the receipient is probably much better off - but the timing, bites.
A young National Guard father of a seven week old son was laid to rest here this week, war is truly hell. Georg this tears at the heart a sensitive and well penned poem.
That wife isn't worth the words. That soldier is a hero! She should be proud! Her man loves her enough to go through hell to keep her safe! But then, I have known men who went off to war and asked their wives through email for a divorce! Go figure. Georg, this is so sad to me.
Love,
annie
Oh my friend, what a heart breaking write! I can't imagine how a human with any kind of heart could do this to another...selfish, cruel, and heartless! It would be hard to have a spouse in the military, missing them, worrying about them, not knowing, fear, but never so hard that it would drive me from the one I love...hmm, that's the key word...love. With love comes respect, honor, dignity, loyalty...sad that one would choose the time that their spouse was defending their country to decide that these didn't exist! I'm not surprised we live in a mixed up world full of selfish people...well done my friend!
Blessings,
Joyce B.
so very true is this. for many years I have watched good men and women thousands of miles away from home get those letters. freezes your blood until the reality of life settles back in.
We were a Military family for 28 years Georg and too often we saw how cruel spouces could be, just waiting for their parteners to be sent off to war so they could did deep within their hearts, so sad.
"That Soldier's not dead...yet"... This is pure poemization of deep emotions ~ poetized with words dictated by mind of reality.
