I was once the houseguest of a family where one of its members had a problem with excessive criticism. I promptly went to a hotel. This poem is the result of that experience.
One thing I don’t want to hear
First thing in the morning
Is criticism.
Wait until after I shower,
Have my energy drink,
And learn today’s forecast.
Then I might be inclined
To hear what you think
Of my chosen dress
My shoes
Or my hairstyle.
Or then again I may not.
It may have to wait
Until I’ve had my morning coffee.
Just know that criticizing
Too early, too soon, or too harshly
Will result in a tiger unleashed
And its rage may be felt
Too early, too soon or too harshly
For you to salvage your hurt feelings.
