Today the air is warmer Both inside the house and out Old Mr. Winter is much too tired To burp out cold, ice and snow Like a mighty shout.
Sunshiny Spring is eagerly trying To splash all yellow through the air While the aftermath of old winter Still fights to retain his icy chair.
The second batch of seasonal leaves Have already begun to fall The lawn, the top of the house, the driveway Are busy catching them all.
Soon it will be gardening time To pull out the rake, bags and wheelbarrow To rake, and rake, and rake some more Too many bags to try and carry.
Lift, push forward, lower and drag, That’s the rhythm of my busy rake, Lift, push forward, lower and drag A catchy little mantra against boredom’s sake.
When the big stuffed bags are stacked in rows
Five bags across, and six bags deep
I know this is only the busy beginning
Of much more raking I must reap.
But thank God spring is on its way
After Old Mr. Winter takes his long nap
So that flowers will start to grow again
And sunlight hovers above the earth
Like a huge summer cap.

And from my sunny patio in Southern California, I well remember the burdens of snowy days. (Sure, easy to fondly remember, now!)
But raking leaves and cleaning up are all part of caring for God's world. Just think how much healthy exercise we get. Maybe God creates the winter circumstance to keep our minds and bodies occupied. It's an old quotation, but remember this: "For Satan finds some mischief still, For idle hands to do."
Now, I'll be the first to admit that a 6-pack will carry me all winter, but an icy Bud sure tastes good after a spell in the yard.
