Umbrella Sky
Did I pray too hard, did I pray too long
For cooling rain to fall upon the land
The sky has opened up like an ocean
That ebbs and flows on bleached sand.
The heavenly umbrella is a solid mass of blue
With no cloud banks in the sky
The day is dark like night before dawn
As rain keeps pouring from up high.
Over near the coast I hear there’s a storm
Moving toward land from out in the sea
Since I live centrally between the east and west coasts
I hope it’ll never get to me.
Still, I sit and gaze out of my window
Seeing the water-spattered diamonds on the leaves
They shine, glisten and glow like laughter teardrops
Washing away the dust and purifying the trees.
Its like autumn needed a reminder
Not to drop its colored leaves too soon
Nor change the colors of the earth
Until the appearance of the wonderful old harvest moon.
So the rain will keep things green with life
For a while longer before the season peaks
And I’ll keep dragging out my lawn mower
And change to my rake in just a few short weeks.
