On Sunday evening we were watching "Deep Blue" on Discovery. It was such an invigorating experience and one of the best nature shows I have watched in a very long time. I would happily recommend it.
Rhapsody.........
Mountains of water in an instant created,
ocean is rough, waves climbing high.
Sky powder blue, wind is gusting,
sea creatures leaping to kiss the sky.
With exquisite grace they dive back down,
disappear from sight in the sea below.
Blue whale and calf slowly sleek by,
a rhapsody lullaby moving ever so slow.
Orca's are circling to gather their prey,
as sea lions and pups enjoy sandy shore.
An island oasis, a sanctuary for birth,
yet, some pups will fall to the orca's allure.
Abundance of color explodes from beneath,
in a tropical sea where coral reefs abound.
All shapes and sizes, extend for miles,
a magnificent, colorful display all around.
Whale shark glides by with grace and ease,
her size immense while those around feed.
Seagulls above dive deep into the sea,
for their fair share of food they need.
Spread their wings wide, up high they soar,
while other whales circle for tiny shrimp.
Tuck in their wings, freefall and dive,
seahorses, squid, dolphins swim by limp.
Rules of the ocean are simple at best,
survival of the fittest is part of God's plan.
Enjoy the ocean for all its glory and beauty,
not meant for interference by any man.

Very evocative Karen. I recently visited Hermanus (South Africa) to see the SOuther Right Whales which migrate from Antarctica and your poem took me right back there.

We need more poets/writers who have the beauty & protection of that beauty at the heart of there work. Especially when as disciplined and perfect as this poem is. It's masterful. Before I had to sell my house in Daytona and move inland to the Ocala National Forest, I was a "beach boy". I miss it. Where is the picture? I had no idea our postings could be done so visually vibrant. I'll have to try color. A wonderful nature write. Great title.
I checked out your site and saw your books; being new to Authorsden I didn't sense you were such a fine poet until today. Thanks for your comments on my poem a few days back. Karen, such a beautiful painting and illustrated in a voice of pure love, peace, and greatness for the ocean and its magnitude and sea life. This instantly captured me and kept me glued until the last line. I do believe this is one of your better writings.
Karen, I love your poem. Your descriptions of the many kinds of sea life is like a symphony of sights and sounds. The mood is peaceful, and the sensory impressions leave me feeling as though I'm right there on that beach, seeing, smelling,and tasting the wonderful salt air as the waves lap against the shore. A terrific write!

I have seen such documentaries and always wonder about the greatness of Our Creator. There is much diverse life on this world I sometimes wonder why we have to explore deep space where such treasure cannot live. Victor
A most wonderful rhapsody, Karen, and you have captured the essence of what has inspired and invigorates you. This is soothing and stimulating in equal measures. The Oceans are surely something we would do well to consider more... we are such earthbound creatures! I'm sure both our eyes and our minds would be enlarged to a greater understanding if we could stretch both our gaze and our thinking. Thank you for taking us there. Kate xx

The oceans seems to have been the only ones to fend off man.
We have spoiled a little its skin, but its heart we can't reach, not yet...until man finds the way to destroy its bottom in search of Mammon's heart.
Saw "Deep Blue" and was impressed, as impressed with this poem and about the survival of the fittest, saddly we are doing our earnest that it don't last longer.

it is full of such harmony which is the way i believe the sea works.
sure some things eat other things but there seems to be laws of the ocean that we know nothing about even though we've watched the interactions closely.
did you know that the male seahorse carries the babies/eggs? haha!
