What's to see
As I look out upon
The snowy valley?
I see the mountains distant,
With farms between
Here and there,
Their dark red barns
Standing stark
Against the white;
I see herds of cattle,
And a few horses,
Huddled about massive
Round rolls of hay.
On either end of the valley
I see church steeples,
One Baptist,
The other Methodist,
With the tiny dark dots
Of their cemeteries
Barely visible
In the the snow;
And sprinkled throughout,
I see houses
With smoke rising,
Wreathing the air,
From chimneys
And furnace vents.
All is quiet
As I stand
Inside the warmth
Of my boots and
Long wool coat,
With not even a bird call
To be heard
In the cold
Of this winter morning.

But the ice covered tree reminds me of when those dreaded ice storms for their damage to power lines and making roads to select to travel were over on the bright blue next chilly day. It seemed that any forest was transformed into a crystalline magic land with sunlight bursting, sometimes in colors, from everywhere at every angle. You wished for it to stay that way, but the warm sun usually melted it off within a couple of days.
