Gulls flit and soar
In our ship's wake
Searching out delicacies
Churned up from within
The briny waters.
She is a tall ship,
The Gloria Marie,
A magnificent relic
From another time
When only the winds
And the waves
Could move her.
Now she is reborn,
Restored to her
Original beauty
With carefully disguised
Modern conveniences
And protections
Meant to minimize
The dangers once faced
By all
Seagoing voyagers.
The sails are unfurled,
Billowing as they catch
Every nuance of wind,
And as the waves
Part gracefully
Before her bow,
With dolphins dancing
Alongside,
I lift my face to the sun;
Closing my eyes
I breathe deep
To fill myself with
The purest
Essence
Of the sea.
You made me feel like I was there. I certainly hope you are able to sail on that ship one day. Bringing those old ships back for people to try is a wonderful thing to do. There are many plans for modern ships to use sales to augment their polluting carbon-based fuels. Why not capture the power of the wind? It's free and readily available at sea most of the time.
The only time I sailed, was with a rich woman on her sailboat on Rainbow Lake in the Chain of Lakes, Wisconsin, to the Presbytery owned Onaway Island where there was a beautiful outdoor chapel designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. On the way, we passed Esther Williams island. The movie star owned the island only a very short time. She left and sold it, she said, "Because the natives gawked at her when she took her morning swim."
There appeared to be no wind, but the sailboat magically moved across the calm waters silently and majestically as the woman took movies holding her camera with an artificial hand because she had apparently lost her hand. I wanted to sale ever since again. And only did once on a canoe trip in Canada.
