This came to mind when I looked at the painting, "Madonna and Child--In the Storm of Creation," painted by Olga Polunin.

Poem Artwork

Thunder mutters a curse in a threatening tone,
The turgid air is thickly scented with ozone,
Purple clouds gather, see a mother lying prone,
Her pregnant belly spasms, she sobs with a moan,

She was trying to reach shelter before the rain,
That was before she began to have labor pains,
The start of the contractions could not be contained,
How long she's labored, it's too hard to ascertain,

Lightning dances in the laboring mother's eyes,
She screams her agonies to the burgeoning skies,
They increase in volume, to a roar from a sigh,
The baby bursts forth from between its mother's thighs,

The first thing Baby sees is a streak of pure light,
Baby reaches for it, mesmerized by the sight,
Thunder tickles his tummy, he laughs in delight,
This, the Storm Child, has absolutely no fright.
