they worked tirelessly, nonstop, through the day
they continued working, working, through the night
for as long as there was the remotest chance
they would not quit, would not give up the fight

they did what was expected of them and more
they worked to save someone's father, someone's son
as the world watched, we were hoping and praying
we needed a miracle since nine-one-one

and then we saw them rising into the night
exhausted, rescuers and the men they saved
their faces dirty, but expressing such joy
miners released from what could have been their grave
