... I waited ... .

Mother's Day and I am without the
son I labored to bring forth.  Arms
emptied of the weight of you, heart
broken into a million jagged pieces.

I remember the pain of your birth.
And I remember the pain of you
being ripped from my arms, a pain
that never leaves.  Time has not

dulled its sharpness.  The last time
I held you, you were six.  Not all
sons lost to death, but by divorce
and laws.  And now you are a man:

Son, I was hoping for a call or a
card.  I miss you more than words
can say.  I waited ... Mother's Day
and I am without my son.  Again.

(c) 2009, Karla Dorman (5/11)

I can feel your pain, Karla. I have an estranged daughter that wants nothing to do with me. My son has forgiven me and moved on, but if we talk, it's because I called him.

my goodness, Karla, this rips me up and takes my breath away. If this a personal account, then I'm flabberghasted. Such pain is inexhaustible and I feel your endless searching and inextinguishable hope within the despair. One of your most powerful and impacting writes. My love and prayers that there will one day come a resolution and healing in this most grievous situation. Kate xx

Oh Karla, this poem aches so much with a mother's pain...and it brings tears to the one who reads, but the cord between mother and child is never "cut" even though they wander away. I just hope he returns soon.

Karla,
Like Axilea, I have a different experience but I feel the pain in this and understand all too well. You are brave and honest to share with us and I wish you love, lots of love, and one day perhaps...

The parting of parent from child is one of the most painful there can be on this earth, and when it is because of divorce, separation or adoption it is often more painful than even death for there is never any closure. I know...I had to give up my daughter when her mother and I divorced when she was only five. I was one of the lucky ones though and I got to have her every weekend, special occasions etc. I can not even contemplate what it would be like to have not have her in my life all these years...my heart truly goes out to you Karla and a big cyber hug from me to you...

I can understand what you mean by
"a pain that never leaves.
Time has not dulled its sharpness."
because that kind of pain never leaves,
the moment is written in our body and soul.
I have a different experience,
but I can feel the emotion expressed here.
