Horseshoe Crab Diary

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The horseshoe crabs were mating today
Such a laborious business
To propagate the species
For sure it was not an affair of the heart
There were many more further out on the shore
Graciously moving through the waves
Searching for a match
I saw one upside-down
Grasping the air with its spider-like arms
Trying to set itself straight
With a sword of a tail
It seemed so awkward
So out of place
Outside the sea it knew so well
So I picked up a piece of driftwood
And set it straight
And back it went into the changing tide
I knew all to well how it felt to be awkward
For I was no longer in your arms
As you faded into the horizon
Leaving me vulnerable and exposed to the air
Robert, I wonder sometimes how many poems we never get to see. I can almost see you, your mind. Always thinking, creating...always searching for a scrap of paper or something, anything, to jog a thought down onto. It hurts to be gasping for air. ~ Sara
Awesome title! And the content is intriguing and very seductive within its visuals and metaphor. You get inside those hidden chambers of the mansion with this one, Jude!
very nice poem poem, jude. Quirky and tender and set by the seaside, what more could one ask? John Betjeman has a beautiful poem called A Russell Flint - 'hold me while the tide goes down' all about rock pools and love. You'd like it! k
I think we've all been there Ace.
Fortunately, there are compasionate souls,
such as yourself, who come along and set us straight.
Your pensive mood just flows from this write, and the last line open and on it's own perfectly expresses it's meaning. Beauty, Jude...
My goodness... must be something in the water, or pheromones in the air or something... heavy hearts all round. What it is to be out of one's skin: this is certainly quite a direct hit, rather than a sideways crab-like shuffle! Oh dear, yes the pain of how there is sometimes the mating game that becomes "just life" - or there's the entanglement of hearts that couldn't separate even if they wanted to. Just a total travesty when the two literally don't marry up! As usual, you have the gift of making us feel exactly what you suggest you are feeling, whether an assumed voice or not. Hope your driftwood happens along soon, Jude... perferably with a beautiful castaway on board! Plenty of moods of motion in this one... leaves me feeling a bit sea-sick, but then my sea-legs aren't that good... nor my land-legs either, come to think of it... Kweasy Kate xx
Just goes to show that through the eyes of a poet, all things reflect the ultimate truths and rituals of love in the world. From its tough exterior to its gently pulsing interior, this poem mesmerizes in a beautiful way.
The segue is flawless, Jude. We sometimes mirror nature, and since nature was here first, it is we who see ourselves in IT, not the other way 'round. Within your words is a mind-picture, a look at the human heart. You do this so well. katy xox
I always like your work, but this is just so good. The "affair of the heart" line speaks a universal truth. To me, it is the key of the entire work, serving as a subtle revelation of how similar we are to the crab. Awesome write.
WOW, Robert this is SO good! Your images strong and the end, a total wrapping together of the rest of your verses. In some way, perhaps only a small way, everything we experience circles into a certain part of our life. As selfish as it may sound to say, it really is all about me or all about you. It is how we learn and how we blend with all that surrounds us.
Take care,
Sherry
