I thought as I wrote this silly thing that it might help if there were a trombone blaring, or a cello flaring, Okay, maybe a juice harp whining, in the background. It is all in fun. dlj

Hop, skip, and jump
Dan Johnson
© June 2010

I had a dream deep in the night you spoke,
Then you said
“Come to me you sexy devil,
Don’t care how you get here,
Even if you have to
Hop, hop, and hop,
Skip, skip, and skip
Or
Jump, jump, jump
Into my arms,
Just get here.”

I woke from this dream, rubbed sleep from my eyes
Then quickly realized what I had to do.
Out of bed, cobwebs faded from my head…
I
Hopped like a bunny,
Don’t laugh, this isn’t funny,
Skipped like a rope,
Mama didn’t raise any dope…and
Jumped farther than a Calaveras County Frog,
Right into your arms.
I
Thought I was on my way,
Then verse two came to say

When I hopped
The first hop up in the air
Brought me as quickly down
As I had gone up,
Twisting my ankle,
As I hit the hardwood floor
Then,
When I skipped,
I daintily tripped,
The rotating rope,
Guess I was the dope.
Then,
As I jumped across
The moon lit sky,
I gazed downward
Claiming all I saw as my vast domain,
(Yours too, you know, that community property thing,)
I forgot to look up,
Oops,
Too late,
I collided with Howard the Duck.
What dumb luck.
Thanks be
There will be no verse three.

I can so picture this! So often when we have good intentions, something comes along and sidetracks us, bandages, braces, tourniquets, and all...be well, DJ...

This poem takes the romantic first verse literally and turns it into a calamity by the end verse. Very funny! It's like having a candlelight dinner and knocking over the candles. Plus the reference to Howard the Duck is cute, plus dates the reader if he/she gets it!

Love the whole approach, language and style: self-effacing, mortal and honest, this is just great, Dan!
