Campfire Light

We sit in the campfire light

in a circle of ancient fellowship

The tales told of history are passed down

by word of mouth

We sense it burning down

as we gaze into the flames

there is peace in our souls

in the dying light

It’s burning down to embers

and there’s a great power in the light

The circle tells of our spirits

A warriors tale

the great hunt to survive, many lives

They give of their offerings for others

The pay homage to the dead

The earth reclaims its own

The dust and ashes now gone

but remembered as time is irrelevant

Their ghosts await rebirth

as earth turns, great spirit returns

We see redemption in the campfire light

We see redemption in the campfire light

Marvelous, Dale, and one of my great pleasures on my treks to the woods is sitting around that blazing campfire at night.

JUST FANTASTIC, Dale. So much, as usual, in so few words, but thoroughly lingering and enduring. I hope you will publish this somewhere. It has ethereal, mystical and yet deeply grounding and stabilising qualities that bring hope for the future as well as reconnecting us with our past. I am continually awed by your gift of articulating so many different levels and depths with such "sparse" and deceptively "simple" lines. Poetry at it's best. TY Kate xx

Dear Dale,
This beautiful, entrancing poem, reminds me of the ancient celebrations of Samhuin, when the Druids covered the embers of the "old" fire - as the end of a Cycle - and which they would keep in their care till the next Spring Equinox, when they would rekindle them again, thus giving birth to the "new" fire - or the beginning of yet one more Cycle of Life.
Bravo, Poet!

the campfire is a magical experience where people could gather and share life experience ... unfortunately, in this present age the tv has become the campfire for most ... your poem rekindles the wonder and mystery of the spiritual essence of the campfire ...

What came to mind in reading this poem is the campfire light being our source, our life. The stories are passed down through generations -- guidance. "The circle tells of our spirits A warrior's tale the great hunt to survive" Our struggle. They fire dies -- ashes to ashes and the earth takes us in but the light still burns -- redemption and rebirth. Great use of metaphor. I like what your poem conveyed to me.

Carmen :-)

Ah, took me back to my pre-teen years when the neighborhood boys would sit around a fire at night and tell horror stories and pretend that we weren't scared shitless. Thanks.

Sitting 'round a campfire

Brings the soul such delight.

I'm not sure if it's the embers

Or the stars that glow so bright.

It seems we've moved so far away

from these simple pleasures of Life.

Thanks for re-kindling the fire CJ.

hi dale thanks for visiting my site & noticing, few bother so i guess im out of their good club. just reading this one off, to start well theme campfire & the collective & personal hallucin, perhaps, is just a great theme for a poem to start out from & of course speculative what might rise therefrom. in your info you stress you interest on beat in poetry in free verse, i'm into that, i like the idea of liberating poetry from form as much as containing it, if possible, saludos

What a wonderful write on a thoughtful subject - the mesmerizing, though-provoking, journey into the fire of memories and the past. Thanks for a great write, Dale.

Peace. Joyce
