Coonskin Davy: You see I’d been putting my buckskins on
one leg at a time for years. I climbed into my mocassins
and laced them up. I pulled on my bucksking shirt making
sure the fringe wasn’t tangled. I put on my coonskin cap.
I was ready for bar’ and I was also looking for that rascal
Little Mike. The sawed off little runt stole my musket (or
was that my allowance?) and headed for places unknown.
(Anyway he was hiding from me) I walk aways and sure as
heck there stands that no good scoundrel.
“Alright Tubby, Hold it right there. I’ve been looking for you.”
Many moons had passed, course I wasn’t counting since we
did have the new farmers almanac calendar.
Little Mike: Heck not that fool again. He thinks he’s something,
so tall and all of that. I had stole his musket but shoot it was
a toy and it just about got me killed by swamp rats or was that
junkyard dogs. No matter.
“Alright Coonskin, you got me now! Har! Har! Want your musket
back?”
Coonskin: Why the nerve of that little runt. I’d get my money back,
weren’t no musket I was after.
“You know good and well what I want Mike, my allowance back. You
stole it outta my jacket that day in the park. I saw you down at the
movie matinee last Saturday.”
Mike: He’s dumber than he looks, I mean who the heck wears a
coonskin cap in the dead heat of summer?
“Hey Coonskin if you can catch me I’ll give you back your allowance.”
Har! I’d spent that buck and a quarter over a week ago. He’d be
sweating buckets when he caught up with me, even though he
could outrun me.
“Coonskin you couldn’t catch a coon so I don’t know who you stole
that cap off. But it’ll be a cold day in H E double hockey sticks fore
you catch me.”
Coonskin: When I catch him I’m gonna skin him for sure. I took off
running and I see he ducks out down the alleyway towards the river.
No matter I’ll cut him off at the path to the Big Sandy. I ran a ways
and then I hear the dogs barking. Dang! Now I can’t cut across the
junkyard. We shall meet again Little Mike!
The adventures of boys are always just that - adventurous and reminds me of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn and my sons [when they were young] - always getting into something.
More! more!
What a fun read! I too am looking forward to Part 2, (too bad ya didn't have a few steaks lying around...you coulda fed them, junkyard dogs, and cut him off!
