Commended Yellow Moon Spirit of the Place Competition
Yellow Moon # 20, Australian Summer 2006
on a dry spring day
of another drought year
the footpath bit my foot
and held it fast
a grip that halted my stride,
midstep,
while my body lurched ahead
unmindful of the need to slow down
to stop and smell the roses,
stunted,
in out of season confusion
fighting for space with onion weed
that exploded between weathered pickets
in its rush to escape
the thirst of suburbia
the footpath released my foot,
suddenly,
it stroked my knee
with sandpaper hands
and grabbed my face in passing,
caressing it roughly,
before it left me
abandoned and bereft
in the dusty gutter
of the street to nowhere,
the scent of onion weed
a piquant reminder
of survival
in the harsh climate of life
