In the sixth year
of my school girl shyness
You gave me my first valentine.
I turned red and ran away from you.
Did you know,
that I loved you
from the first moment
that you walked into first grade?
I loved your smile,
Your softness as you
held my hand
as we skipped down the street together.
You introduced me to your mom
as the girl you were going to marry
She laughed and said "It's only puppy love."
She was so wrong!
We were soul mates
destined to be together forever
Today is a special celebration
Fifty years since that first valentine.
My Precious Valentine,
Come bring your tenderness
here to me, as I lay
under the protection of angel wings.
Never forget our special kiss
Never forget our special bliss
Never forget our wonderful years
and never forget all those tears.
When angel's wings fold around you
know that I am holding you to,
and even though I am no longer there,
always know I will forever care.

In my eyes
A song in my heart
Silvery snakes and butter flies
Conquered my stomach
Whenever you came into my sight.
I knew something was different

I couldn’t wait
For Monday morning
To arrive
For in school you were
My favorite sight.
Mom thought you were cute
Just two lovely
Children in puppy love
If only she knew
I was in love with you.
At times my eyes would tear
Whenever within my thoughts
You were not near
I would close my eyes
To ease the pain
Of a broken heart.
Now I still feel that same thrills
After so many years
As we hold our aging hands
Not as soft as yesteryear’s
Yet still warm with love.
In my mind our love
Dwells
Since the first day of school
To the now
Fifty years later
My “I Love You”
Seem to still rhyme
With the beat of two aging hearts
Deeply in love
Never destine to be apart
On another Valentine’s Day
