Demons and Fireflies

A desciption of my bumbling, stumbling determined efforts to write.

I want to be a writer but there's a murky distance between head and paper...a twisting road filled with demons of distractions and doubt.

Big inspirations become little winged creatures darting in and out of sight. I reach to grab one and manage to slam it onto the paper. Now unrecognizable, its a meaningless glob of gibberish.

Gahhh...might as well trim my toenails.

Tonight I'll try again. The invisible blinders are on, dishes in the sink, unswept floor, the bird yapping in my ear and dog snoring at my feet... will not keep me from this mission. Phone rings...my best friend.

Might as well wash the dishes while we talk.

This morning will be perfect. I'm awake an hour early with pen and paper on the bed. The coffee maker's gurgling and cigarettes are handy. Now then where are my notes? Oh yeah...downstairs in my sparkling clean kitchen.

Oh frapps, might as well forget it...go to work early.

Tonight those little winged creatures transform to sneering monsters of doubt as the demons of distraction call me to an early bath. But that's okay...I'll jot down new ideas that seem to come to me in the solitude of this time. Now where's my tablet and pen? Oh crapola, they're back on the bed.

Oh well...I'll just shave my legs a day early.

Titles without stories, stories without titles waiting for one more edit. Too many words, not quite right. And what step comes next if I DO happen to finish something?

I'm sure there's an answer in one of my 'how to' books.

Hmmm..why is there a 'w' in answer?
Shouldn't we say...'ans-whur'? Let me ponder that a while before I search for my pen and paper because you see... I really want to be a writer.

All you do is take both of your hands and jump in like a quick dive into a pool of cold water. Once you begin writing, you'll love it, and before you know it, you're a writer like the rest of us.

Pat,

I've often wondered what those things were that kept interupting my thought process. "Demons and Fireflies?" Hopefully having them named will be helpful in dodging them next time around. Thanks for your helpful thoughts. Dick

You ARE a writer, and one I'm enjoying very much. ( I try not to say "very." Isn't it supposed to be an unnecessary word that we should avoid?) Anyway, this is very good, in my opinion, and I am a writer. (I said so, and that clinches it.)
The said thing about this story is that it sounds like my whole life; maybe it's the distractions that add to the art!
Please keep writing!
Connie

Dear Pat, I believe this happens to many who should become writers.
It happened to me when, for the first time in the United States, I wanted to write, suddenly I had unexpected guests in my house. Finally instead of finding a subject, I wrote about the guests and the pleasure we had. You did the same, meanwhile you wrote the real story and not a fantasy story. My dear, keep going and write the real stories. Very well done my friend. Love Emile

Nobody really wants to be Pharaoh's Scribe, the freedom to write, the inspiration, the leaning, everything else...are the small pieces of tissue that will become a rose when put together or just an incomprehensible jigsaw.
Saying "I want to be a writer" is the first step to becoming one.

Georg

Procrastination. Biggest problem for me. All the good ideas vaporize while I falsely believe I'll remember in 20 or 30 minutes. You're right, ridiculous language. Six words pronounced the same with different spelling and totally different meanings. And sometimes spelled exactly the same with totally different meaning. My pet seal broke the seal on his treat bag despite the good housekeeping seal of approval for the wrapper. Ah the opportunities. Go for it writer. Patrick
